Mercedes has recently taken the covers off the facelift GLA Class which will be sold as the 2018 model. The car was recently unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. The GLA was launched for the first time back in 2013 and it impressed everyone with its handling and refinement characteristics. The facelift Mercedes GLA gets new LED headlamps which replaces the Bi-Xenon headlamps available on the current GLA. These LED units gets a colour temperature which is equivalent to the colour temperature of daylight which helps in relieving the strain from the driver’s eyes when they are driving at night. The low beam gets projector technology while the high beam gets LED reflector technology. The headlamp bulb is ever lasting and there is no need to change the bulb over the entire lifetime of the car. Apart from the new headlamps the car also gets a redesigned grille while the front bumper has also been tweaked slightly to match with all the other exterior changes.

The facelift compact SUV apart from styling tweaks also gets an improved aerodynamics as well. The GLA already benefits from good flow characteristics which help in contributing to the low fuel consumption. The changes to the facelift SUV includes a low A pillar step, aerodynamically optimized exterior mirror housings, an aerodynamically optimized rear silencer with connected rear diffuser which helps in improving the air flow beneath the SUVs body. Towards the rear the SUV further gets a roof spoiler lip. The rear profile also gets aerodynamically shaped taillamps plus side rear spoilers. These changes ensure that the air flow towards the rear end of the car is also aerodynamically optimal.

Now step inside and this is when you can’t make any difference between the A siblings if you are not a keen observer. Only way to feel the difference is the seat height, which is slightly above the average sedan height but in the world of SUVs, it is still low. What changes in the GLA facelift you ask? Well, nothing major apart from the new three-spoke steering wheel, ambient lighting with 12 colours and a bigger 8-inch infotainment display that now comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The steering now has a 3D effect to it, the horn pad jutting out, looks nice. The screen is bright and clear but it’s not touch, you have to control it via the COMMAND system knobs. Otherwise everything is similar and the dashboard looks quite attractive, specially the slightly updated instrument cluster. I also like the way the aircon vents are styled, practical yet flashy. However, I really can’t digest the fact that a Rs. 40 lakh + Mercedes doesn’t come with auto climate control! It doesn’t even have a reverse parking sensor but thankfully gets a camera.

What you would like in the GLA is the fantastic quality, consistency and the feel of materials. Everything is top notch, the equipment list is quite strong too, push button start, panoramic sunroof, electric seats, driving modes, electric tailgate, etc. The seats also get soft leather which smells nice too. Now the rear seat experience is average if you have the SUV practicality in mind because headroom for tall passengers is limited and because of the huge transmission hump, the middle passenger might find it a squeeze. The tailgate now is electrically operational. The boot is quite big and accommodating but the spare space saver wheel just eats up a lot of space.

The GLA range of SUV’s includes GLA 180 (petrol), GLA 200 (petrol), GLA 250 (petrol), GLA 250 4MATIC. The Mercedes GLA is available in the Indian market the GLA 200 and the GLA 200 and the GLA 200 D variants. The GLA 200 is powered by the 2.0 Litre, four cylinder unit which is capable of producing about 183 Hp of peak power at 5500 rpm and 300 Nm of torque in between 1800-2400 rpm. The GLA 200 D on the other hand gets the 2.2 Litre inline 4 diesel model which produces about 136 Hp of peak power and 300 Nm of torque in between 1600 to 3000 rpm. Both the engines are paired to a 7G-DCT 7 speed dual clutch transmission.

The 2018 Mercedes GLA gets a new model in the form of GLA 220 4MATIC, this variant is powered by 2.0-litre petrol engine that produces 135 kW (184 hp) and 300 Nm of torque.

Mercedes has upped its game in the dynamics department with the newer lot of cars. Same is the case with the GLA and its ride and handling balance. I really like the way it soaks bumps and takes undulations. You won’t feel out of place on bad Indian roads with this pliant ride quality. Well, ride has been Mercedes’ forte always but they have managed to strike the right balance of handling as well. The nose turns in quickly with your steering inputs and the feedback isn’t numb. It provides consistent feel while cornering and you know where it’s going. Body roll is there but it’s not to the extent that you get annoyed, the roll is controllable. I was a bit disappointed with the brakes of my test car because the previous publication who got hold of it had tested it on the BIC. The brake pads were worn off and the pedal feel was inconsistent.
