Toyota Etios Overview

Toyota has refreshed its entry-level sedan, the Etios, in an effort to make it more appealing to personal car buyers. A spacious and practical car, the Etios has been around for over five years and is a popular pick in the taxi-fleet market thanks to its affordability, low running costs and reliability. However, it hasn’t seen much success as a personal or family car, and that’s mainly down to its dull looks and unappealing interiors. With this makeover, which gives the sedan a new nose section as well as a host of new features, Toyota is looking to address just that.

Toyota Etios Exterior & Look

Viewed head on, the Etios looks much more appealing. The front bumper is now wider, and there’s a new high-mounted grille as well; this combination makes the car look a lot more sportier. What’s nice are the black inserts in the chin area that look quite upmarket. However, to keep costs down, the headlamp hasn’t been modified and there are no sheet metal changes either, so the odd proportions of the earlier car remain. At the rear, the changes include a re-profiled rear bumper, and a chrome strip with red reflectors on the boot lid. But these do little to boost the car’s appeal.

There aren’t too many tweaks on the mechanical front either, as the Etios continues to use a 68hp 1.4-litre diesel engine which comes mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. However, Toyota has managed to reduce noise and vibration levels on this facelift by using more insulation, and the pre-facelift car’s rubber engine mounts have been replaced by hydraulic ones, which absorb vibrations from the diesel engine better. Furthermore, Toyota has made the clutch lighter for easier use in stop-start city driving conditions.

Toyota Etios Interior & Comfort

The inside ambience of Toyota Platinum Etios is perfectly in sync with its elegant exterior. The bi-tonal premium interior is high on quality and is pleasing to the eyes. The tri-spoke steering wheel has a silver accent on it and the door trim has fabric insertions. The shift knob is accented with chrome and the door armrests have a wood grain finish. The seats are comfortably wide, and the sedan provides adequate legroom and headroom. The driver’s seat is height adjustable and the front headrest can also be adjusted. The pillow-type headrests on the rear seats add to the comfort.

There are sun visors on the driver’s and the co-passenger’s sides. The fuel lid and tailgate are remote-operated. To further enhance convenience, the power window on the driver’s side has the auto-down function, the electric power steering comes with tilt mechanism, the glove box is cooled and 12 V power outlets are provided at the front. The ORVMs can be adjusted internally using an electronic lever. Platinum Etios also comes with a tachometer, a digital tripmeter, front cabin lights and rear defogger. The air conditioning unit is effective, and that apart, the sedan has a heater and an air filter.

The in-cabin entertainment is looked after by the audio system that comes with a remote. To keep the driver focused, the steering wheel has audio controls mounted on it. The space provided by the boot is of the order 595 L. Additionally, there are seven bottle holders, assist grip with coat hook, and front and rear door pockets.

Toyota Etios Engine & Transmission

Very few changes have been made to the mechanicals of the Etios. The petrol engine is a 1.5-litre unit producing 90 PS of power and 132 Nm of torque, mated to a 5-speed manual gearbox. The engine has good drivability in the city but it seems to run out of breath on the highways or at higher RPMs. Fuel efficiency from the petrol engine is also just about average. However, it has always been the diesel engine which has been fetching sales for Toyota. The 1.4-litre D-4D engine churns out 68 PS and 170 Nm and performance is very good. Power delivery is linear and turbo lag is negligible. The mid-range feels very strong and the car pulls nicely. However, the engine runs out of breath post 3500 RPM. While straight line acceleration isn’t the best, in-gear acceleration is very good and that will satisfy buyers. The 5-speed gearbox isn’t buttery smooth though and takes a mild effort to change gears. To make things easier, Toyota has made the clutch lighter this time around. Also, the clatter from the engine has been reduced thanks to better insulation on the car. The rubber mounts have also been replaced by hydraulic mounts, thus improving the NVH levels. The diesel engine can easily churn out anywhere between 15-19 km/l.

Toyota Platinum Etios petrol engine is equipped with an Electronic fuel Injection (EFI) supply system, which generates a mileage of 16.78 kmpl. The DICOR Diesel engine registers an incredible mileage of 23.59 kmpl. The fuel tank has a capacity of 45 L, and hence, the petrol variant provides a driving range of about 750 km and the diesel variant gives a range of almost 1060km.

Toyota Etios Driving Dynamics

The ride quality on the Etios is very good but the suspension is stiffly sprung and hence some sharp bumps filter in the cabin. However, the car never loses composure and always remains stable irrespective of road conditions. The steering offers brilliant feels and feels great to operate. The car feels eager to dive into corners but on heavy cornering, the tail slides out due to the rear end of the car being a bit too light. Braking performance is also good and confidence-inspiring. Toyota Etios Summing Up

The Etios has always had the makings of a competent, if slightly bland, family car. It’s impressively spacious, very comfortable, and what makes it even more sensible is that it is low on maintenance. It is now also one of the safest cars in its segment; Toyota is likely to get an overall four-star Euro NCAP rating for this facelift, thanks to the added safety equipment on board. With the recent update, the Etios is now better looking, it’s also a bit more refined and more comfortable. However, it’s slightly costlier than before, and as always, it’s pricier than better-equipped compact sedans. That said, if safety, space, practicality and ease of ownership are high on your priority list, the facelifted Etios is surely worth considering.
